New cross-platform CPS software

Post by SA0ASM » Sat Jul 13, 2024 4:02 pm

Hi!

After being fed up with the state of the CPS code "inherited" from the Chinese manufacturers, I attempted to rectify the situation by writing my own from scratch. The initial feedback that I got was that people were really interested in getting it working cross-platform. So I had a go at something portable in .NET.

While I am no developer, I've managed to cobble together a new CPS codebase that now works across Windows, Linux and Mac using the Avalonia UI framework. This initial version reads and writes codeplugs from radios and can be used to edit all the usual contents such as channels, contacts, zones and groups. It can also import CSV files in the same format as the "official" CPS. Please give it a spin and let me know you get on in this thread!

Latest updated 2025-06-09, now requires .NET 8.0. Tested on Windows 10, Linux and Mac OS.

Forgot to mention that on Linux and Mac you need to install the .NET SDK version 7.0 and start the program using:

Code: Select all

dotnet OpenGD77CPS.Desktop.dll

So a bit of a pain to get running on a Mac (due to the unsigned code), but I was able to get it to launch and read from the radio. A great start! Do you have a place where you're collecting bug reports and feature requests?

Glad you got it working! The plan is to make this available as open source on Github eventually, and when I do, using their issue tracking would make sense. Until then, please post suggestions or bug reports here in this thread!

Hey there! This looks fantastic, and does nearly everything I want, but I've noticed that channels don't have location options, and when pulling the codeplug then writing it back all of the locations disappear. Also, the callsign database is missing, but that's relatively minor. Great work nonetheless!

this is not really "cross platform" if it needs wine/mono or .net.

im using linux 4.19.0-27-amd64

i downloaded your .zip, unziped, tried to run with wine, and it opened a window to download .net. in my browser. downloaded windowsdesktop-runtime-7.0.20-win-x64.exe but how do i install that?

thanks for any help,

Please don't use Wine to run this software, it's intended to run natively in the dotnet framework.
Download and install dotnet 7.0 for Linux from here: https://dotnet.microsoft.com/en-us/download/dotnet/7.0
Then run the software using the "dotnet" commandline as stated above!

If the software can't find your radio, try selecting the correct serial port from the drop-down (click on "AUTO DETECT").
To help troubleshoot I would need the output of the "lsusb -v" and "dmesg |grep -2 ACM" commands to start...

ok, thank you so much for the explanation, but for security reasons that is completely not an option here to install anything microsoft or closed source. also it says .net 7 is end of life. i truly appreciate your effort. Good Luck with your development, if you release the source code maybe a python or Qt or node.js version could be developed that would be truly platform neutral and open source.
