OpenGD77

Hi Folks,

I am having issues updating a "Troublesome" GD77S ,,, Meaning basically that I have to resort back to the stock firmware (That is shocking anyway)

Perhaps there is something procedural that I am doing/missing/lacking?

Steps Followed (Some truncation but steps accurate):

- Latest OpenGD77CPS Running
- Connect POWERED OFF GD77S via USB
- Place GD77S into Firmware Update Mode (Remove battery, Reinstall Battery, Press SK1 along with SK2 then power on device ... Green light appears)
- Enter CPS / Extras / Firmware Loader
--> Select Radio Button for GD77S (etc)
--> Push Select Official Donor File and select the "Component" From the GD77. All Successful.
--> Select "Select a file and update" --> Select the OpenGGD77 GD77S firmware file

All erases and flashes successfully.

- Power down and briefly remove battery.
- Reconnect Radio and Read Radio from CPS. Success/
- Select Extras / OpnGD77 Support
- Select "Write Voice Prompt" --? Select say any of the English AU Nicole Monochrome 1.5 VPR files and write this into radio
- Power Down Radio.

Final Step

- Power Radio on while pressing SK2

Radio is effectively bricked until one can eventually force the "Original" v1.3 firmware back onto it. i.e. power down for around 10 secs, Battery out, Battery back, then SK1 and SK2 power on and use original firmware loader techniques.

Any tips as to how to get the OpenGD77 firmware onto an working this hardware?

Is there earlier firmware, that works, that needs to be loaded first? The original firmware/CPS has some nasty bugs and I woud prefer to see the end of it !

but it become bricked even before you write the voice prompts or only after that?

also, if the radio is monochrome screen, make sure you select the monochrome voice prompt, and not the UV380-like voice prompt.

Did you flashed a codeplug after the firmware and/or voice prompts ?

Just tried the latest beta on my GD-77S, and it works as expected.

Did the reflashed radios start out with OpenGD77 FW on it or was it from a stock firmware? That can have implications...

[ The GD77S has no screen nor keypad for the reference of some responders ]

Ps: All steps followed detailed in initial post !

People on forums always respond "But it works for me" 9and I thank those that have here for responses).

Yet what I have here is a number of "Gifted" radios - Plus one that I have had forever that the standard processes have not worked for. They are intended for working with visually impaired clients ...

Therefore instructions, from "Virgin Stock State" to working prompts is sought for here as I cannot for the life of me get the firmware functioning effectively on this model radio. Mind you the GD-77 (and many other "Flavours" of supported hardware - no issues) !

And I repeat, this morning, I flashed the latest beta + latest voice prompt (monochome version) + a codeplug (OpenGD77 format), and it simply works.

Have you tried to reset the settings ? (SK2 + power On).

As for SK2 Power-On - Yes. I have basically tried EVERYTHING from everywhere and trawled the internet extensively now for some time.

Perhaps there is something procedural that I have missed? Both "flavours" of voice prompt for Australian Accents have been tried... and as they are labelled Monochrome or MD380 one does not use the MD380 versions !!!

I am also trying to be assistive here for other uers that i know are experiencing similar issues.

Update: Tried a 3rd radio (that was completely stock ... untested with any OpenGD77 attempts ... based on post instructions in here) ...

Success for the first time !

Now its just an issue diagnosing why the first two test devices m- that had CPS's clared to virgin states With both the Versions 1.2 and 1.3 firmwares tested ! Only 5 more radios to go (I have actually 8 functional versions of these) device !

I'm currently at work, so can't assist until later today.
Long story short, you don't need any specific firmware flashed on the radio prior flashing the OpenGD77, as it's a complete replacement.
Send me the files you flashed on your non working 77S, this way I will be in the same conditions as you (I mean, firmware, voice prompts, codeplug and the donor file). You can get my email address on QRZ.com.
