The firmware update is not via the COM port, so it doesn't matter whether the COM port works or not.

I'm having the same issue i.e no DFU mode even with my modified cable that worked with previous versions of OpenGD77 CPS. I've updated to latest CPS but it won't work with my 1701 so can't update firmware. CPS unable to communicate with radio loop is very frustrating. I'm using Windows 10.

A few things to check

1. Is you radio in DFU mode?
2. When you plug the cable is there any change in the Windows device managed ?
i.e If you have the wrong cable for the radio, Windows normaly displays a message to indicate a USB problem.
If nothing happens when you plug in the USB cable, then something is very broken, i..e the radio or the cable.

Ports and LPT: Silicon Labs CP210x USB to UART Bridge (COM4) (modified cable)
Universal Serial Bus Controllers: nothing showing

If nothing happens when you plug in the USB cable, then something is very broken, i..e the radio or the cable.
I have two 1701s both on Firmware 20231231192808 [140939c 1] same issue with both
I have two cables one modified, the other OEM Baofeng and neither work.
I have two laptops, both running Window 10 and have tied both without success.
My radios were working fine under OpenGD77. I changed nothing. Is this a Windows 10 issue?

There is no Serial to USB converter chip in the transceiver's cable.

definitively you are using the wrong cable, because DM-1701 uses a direct USB cable and not a cable with USB-TTL chip.

I was using wrong cables (modified for UV5R).
I found the 1701 cable and all is well.
