Encryption is not allowed in Amateur radio. OpenGD77 is a firmware for Amateur radio operator, so encryption of any type will not be support.

I have read this explanation too. A few local repeaters owners allow their close friends to use encryption on their ham repeaters. But while that is the official answer, I wonder if the real explanation is “to modify the FW to do everything it does, encryption had to go to make space for the new features”. GARY.

As I understand it, OpenGD77 will have a legal problem once it is not purely for amateur radio, hence, the dev team is trying to avoid anything that can be view as non-ham. As far as I know (I might completely be wrong) the devs are Australia based, and local laws would require them to provide a backdoor to the government and they are also not allowed to disclose that there is a backdoor, making encryption sort of useless (for licensed business use. Encryption is not allowed in ham radio use anywhere in the world).
