Yeah Im beginning to think whatever factory firmware versions are about are not compatible with the radio I have. I'm not sure which mcu I have. I'll have to pop the hood and take a look.

Later opengd77 versions detect the mcu/cpu and displays it in "Firmware info"

I googled for the error message you posted, and people first reported this in 2019 on other forums.

Speculation was that the problem was a mismatch between the official CPS version, and the official firmware version in the radio.

There is still the possibility that the problem is the data in the memory, but you are not the first person to reload the official firmware back onto a MD9600, and the usual symptom of incompatible data in the memory, is that the radio becomes locked via a PIN number, and we there is a known solution to this by editing the official CPS .ini config file

There is one other thing you could try. It is possible that the radio configuration data has been corrupted.

There is a special program that TYT uses to assign configuration data to a radio.
Using it you can change the radio type, display type, etc.

There are no instructions. Use it at your own risk...

I'm so happy I could cry . Finally I managed to get the original firmware back in. I did nothing profound, just kept flashing back and forth between Opengd77 and different versions of Tyt firmware and finally one worked. I'd like to thank everyone who helped me these last few days. It was very much appreciated. It was certainly a learning curve on my end.

What version was that ?
Do you have some link to it for download ?
