Sending aprs message via satellite

Post by PD2CH » Thu May 29, 2025 9:05 pm

Hi all,
first of all thx for sharing opengd77. I made my first qso via the ISS with my Retevis RT3S! Working great.

Got now opengd77 installed on my v5 TYT-MD9600 latest test firmware 20250323. All up and running. When I send a aprs beacon in the air via the normal local aprs Vhf freq I see the 'message' is arriving at the aprs rx station.

When I send a aprs beacon via a satellite (ISS or Sonate-2) I think to see that only the position is send and not a message.
Can I add a aprs 'message' to the satellites.txt file, and if "yes you can"; How to configure this?

Many thx and 73's

If you make an APRS config with the same name as the Satellite, this overrides the default setting for that satellite.

Use a search engine and you will fing multiple articles about this

e.g.

Thx,

I searched the forum the best I could, but it is not clear to me yet how to get a "aprs message" added to the aprs beacon sent to a sat. Same as sent to terrestial aprs stations and know in opengd77 CPS aprs setting <comment>

e.g. This is the original line in satellite.txt:
25544U,ISS ,437.800,145.990, 67, 0,145.825,145.825,145.800, 0,RS0ISS

Can I add my " aprs message" <Hello World> just like this:
25544U,ISS ,437.800,145.990, 67, 0,145.825,145.825,145.800, 0,RS0ISS Hello World

Or should I use a comma or whatever .....?

I will try the above example. Was just wondering what the protocol is.

Thx and 73's

Secondly:

to get the new satellite.txt config in the radio's;

Shoud I :
A: install again the firmware,
B: or should I update the keplers file via cps,
C: or will this satellite.txt file get updatet by uploading the codeplug?

You don't edit the satellites.txt file

You create an APRS config named ISS in the CPS

As usual, it's in the user guide, but who bothers reading/searching...

Hi VE4HTO,

thx for your reply. I do border to read the user-manual and did use a search tool before I made this thread.

But I did not made the connection with the text in the user-manual <define a APRS config> with the setup possibilities in CPS. Nothing in CPS is called APRS config or something the like. Yes there is a setup box to add APRS settings but I thought this was only for terrestial stations. Anyway, leason learned and thx for pointing me in the right direction. I will give it a go

I’ve made a new APRS profile as suggested, now ISS can not hear me anymore. Should I put ARISS or RS0ISS in the via box?
