OK well somehow finally managed to get it to work.

The firmware has been flashed, now the rig has a screen saying

Settings update
OK

And a green flashing light on the front of the rig.

Do I just wait for it to finish doing whatever it is doing?

It's a fresh windows install, Win 7 and SP1 nothing else.

This is catch 22, I can't get the GD77 firmware onto the rig without the software and the software won't run without the firmware being installed.

Not sure if this will help. Completely fresh windows 7 with SP1. Thanks for the reply. Firstly I do not see that item in the device manager, however I do see listed an HID compliant device which when I turn the rig off goes away, and turn rig back on it reappears. Yes it is.

My suspicion is that the drivers for the original version and the GD77CPS are clashing somehow.

The problem is no communication between the software and the rig, without that communication the firmware cannot be loaded.
As previously mentioned the supplied software connects fine.
