Will will hotspot mode work on the MD9600 with the USB cable? Or does it need to have audio i/o? I have a pinout for the hand mic, I've also been thinking of a way to set up my MD-9600 as the Tx of a makeshift repeater using one of these: https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/51lLVJIuONL._AC_SL1001_.j...

Thanks @CU7AAZ - I finished the antenna replacement on my RT-3S and MD-380g with success. The 380 is a little slower than the Retevis, but not a huge deal. Cheap and easy mod, I figured why not!
