M7FEP, are you trying to use your OpenGD77 equipped Baofeng as a radio/modem connected via USB to your pi-star hotspot? Or are you merely trying to configure the Baofeng to use with your pi-star hotspot in the conventional fashion? You say the pi has a hotspot hat, so presumably it's the latter.

If you want to hear a loud, strange noise, use the APO function and wait for it to kick in. When the little warning trill is playing, turn the volume control back and forth.
