After changing the modem type to opengd77 in pi-star, the jumbo's screen kept reading the familiar "close" which I let it do for ten minutes. Giving up, I pulled the power, then powered back up. The lights inside the jumbospot lite up, but the screen is black and stays black forever. BRICK BRICK BRICK

Bricked usually isn't permanent. There's probably a way to get it into a bootloader mode so you can reload the firmware. This isn't the right forum to get help with that though.

I don't thing it's briked (and as Roger stated, you can still flash a MMDVM_HS firmware).
Did you selected the correct modem, something like zumspot gpio ? I guess so since you told the LED are working (but you didn't mentioned if the modem is working.

If the screen is OLED, you need to select the display type accordingly in the configuration page, MMDVMHost Configuration section.

Also, in Expert mode -> MMDVMHost quick editor, check the value of LogoScreensaver in OLED section, as the new default rule on the PiStar is to turn it OFF (blank screen until you receive/transmit)

Cheers.

that option is designed to be used on a raspberry pi ONLY, i.e. without a modem on top.

Best thing you can do, to get the jumbospot working again is to download pi-star and re-flash the micro sd card.

To use pi-star with a gd77, use only a raspberry pi, not a jumbospot.

good luck.

Hi,

You can use a GD-77 as a hotspot, even when a MMDVM modem hat is still plugged, but you can only use ONE modem at a time.
So, if you select the opengd77 modem, the Zumspot will be disabled (and vice-versa).
About the OLED screen, that's different, I don't see any problem using it (it's I2C) with a GD-77. But you need to ensure that OLED display is selected.

About the Nextion screens, that's a different story: if it's connected using the MMDVM_HS's "SERIAL_REPEATER" (read: through the modem), it won't be possible to use it (other GPIO / USB to Serial converter might work).

Cheers.

I am not looking to use the gd77 as a hotspot. All I want to do is get on the air with the opengd77 and my jumbospot. Using the gd77 as a hotspot may or may not be fooled with a bit later.

in that case do not use the drop down menu to select open gd77, keep that on the hat that is on the pi.

just program the gd77 and hotspot on the same frequency/colour code on time slot 2
