Hello

I m trying to hit the ISS's digipeater with my DM-1701
and send a position report unsuccessfully.
Can you post your satellite.txt ISS settings?

Thank you very much
YO3ABC
I'm also trying to hit the ISS's digipeater with DM-1701 and so far with no luck.

Best regards

As far as IIn any case the file satellites.txt (which Windows' File Explorer insists on displaying as merely "satellites")
Go to folder options/view/advanced settings, unclick "Hide extensions for known file types" and your Windoze experience will be much more pleasant. :)

Last night I finally succeeded to make contact to ISS digipeater and to have my call sign on the http://ariss.net/

Call Messages lat lon Time Heard (UTC)
YU3SSP-7 . . . 20240705215644

So it is possible to do it with DM-1701.

I didn't manage to send my location so I will try to solve this problem in the future.

Nice work YU3SSP

My satellite.txt entry for ISS
<<25544U,ISS ,437.800,145.990, 67, 0,145.825,145.825,145.800, 0,ARISS 0WIDE2 1>>
I changed to
<<25544U,ISS ,437.800,145.990, 67, 0,145.825,145.825,145.800, 0,RS0ISS 0WIDE2 1>>
no luck so far

Best wishes

My satellite.txt is the same with RS0ISS.

So far I make some changes in the satellites.txt:

Code: Select all

25544U,ISS ,437.800,145.990, 67, 0,145.825,145.825,145.800, 0,RS0ISS APRS
This ended up with following packets:

Code: Select all

UT7UX-7>APOG77,RS0ISS,APRS:!<my_coordinates_here>E0
Where:
  • UT7UX-7 appears incorrect; must be UT7UX-12 since it's the one-way tracker
  • RS0ISS,APRS appears correct since ISS may not accept standard ARISS alias for some reason (normally should be ARISS) and sure we'd wish our beacon to be seen on APRS. We should not use WideN-n here as with enormous satellite coverage we don't need any further relaying among terrestrial digipeaters.
  • ! (exclamation mark) appears correct since we cannot exchange messages with one-way tracker
  • 0 (zero, the last character) is APRS symbol '0' (overlay). How may I chose smth else among standard/alternative APRS symbols there are?
Anyway, it does work.

Any more suggestions?

ISS APRS is not always active. Check the ISS status web page

You do not need to change satellites.txt

Yes, Findu appears a good source to check. Also, I've got another HT to monitor both mine and ISS' packets with APRSdroid software.

Actually no, I may need to change satellites.txt since default PATH does not appear the working one. For some reason ISS wants exact RS0ISS instead of satellite alias ARISS. I don't need WIDEn-N when my beacon is bouncing off the SAT since ISS covers some 15 million square kilometers from its orbit; other packet satellites on higher orbits have even greater area coverage. It appears pretty irresponsible to engage terrestrial digis in relaying the packet that is already broadcasted to such huge area. Also, I may wish my packets to reaman NOGATE or RFONLY, to be relayed via some particular satgate, and so on.

What is still unclear to me is how do I change SSID to 12 (one-way tracker) since SSID-7 (man-controlled portable station that supports messaging) is definitely incorrect and confusing. Also, it would be fun to play with APRS symbol.

One-way trackers should best use the -12 one-way SSID indicator
because the -9's usually mean a ham in full APRS communication
both message and voice. The -9's can be contacted by APRS message
or by Voice on his frequency included in his beacon, or on Voice
Alert if he is in simplex range. The -12's are just moving Icons
on the map and since they have no 2 way communication for ham radio
they are not generally of routine interest to other operators.

SSID is unlikely to be the problem.

The ISS probably changed their configuation to require RS0ISS instead of ARISS

Looking at one of the ISS web pages

https://www.ariss.org/contact-the-iss.html

It states
Packet Operations

There is one radio on the ISS that operates as a packet digipeater. The Columbus D710GA can support those operation at about 10 watts and uses NA1SS. It will respond to the alias "ARISS".
However....

Above this on the same page it says
Call Signs in Use

The following call signs are available for use on the ISS:

Russian: RS0ISS

USA: NA1SS

European: DP0ISS, OR4ISS, IR0ISS

So I think probably what has happened, is that the current callsign is not NA1SS but is RS0ISS and somehow the packet configuation has been changed to this

In which case, if there is a European operator, then possibly the ISS APRS settings could change again to DP0ISS, OR4IS or IR0ISS

In the normal APRS configs, create a configuration called ISS and then define the settings you want e.g. use RS0ISS and then try again.
The APRS config of ISS should override the settings in satellites.txt

Yes. I know this is not documented. It appears to be missing from the User Guide

These logs seems to indicate that RS0ISS is used.
