Windows 7 laptop?

Post by N4KVE » Sun Mar 09, 2025 5:04 am

Picked up a DM-1701, & wondering if I can use my Windows 7 32 bit laptop to run the program with the GD77 FW, & program the radio. Thanks. GARY

Wait. You have the radio. You have the laptop. You have an internet connection so you can download the cps, firmware, and drivers.

Try it. Report back here with your results.

I should have the radio tomorrow. A friend who already has a 1701 with OpenGD77 will upgrade my radio with his laptop. He has a memory stick with the GD77 CPS on it. So I’m asking someone who’s already using a Windows 7 laptop to run the program vs me experimenting on my laptop. GARY.

If you are not trying to upgrade the firmware on the radio. It should be fine. The comport driver for OpenGD77 CPS is not quite fuzzy as the DFU driver.

The CPS is compiled for X86 however it is dependany on Dot Net 4.8, and I don't know if that version of Dot Net is available for W7 32 bit

Why don't you simply install a newer version of Windows e.g. Windows 10 IOT

I’ve been programming Motorola radios for decades. They need to use a laptop from the same era they were made. For my System Sabers, I have a true DOS Toshiba Satellite. For my MTS2000’s, & other radios from the 90’s, I have a Windows XP laptop. For my XTS’s, XTL’s, & Trbo radios, I use my Windows 7 32 bit laptop, & for my newest APX’s, I do use a Windows 10 laptop. So if I need Windows 10, I have a laptop for that, but I’d rather use my Windows 7 laptop if I could. So I’d rather know which laptop I could use. But I’d prefer the 7 laptop because it’s much smaller, & easier to carry around. GARY

This isn't legacy firmware or software, its under active development, so you should use whichever laptop best suited for this use-case

For the benefit of the 520 people who read my OP, but didn’t know the answer, the OpenGD77 CPS runs perfectly on a Windows 7 32 bit machine. GARY.

Glad to share. So many times on Radio Reference a guy asks a question, & ten minutes later replies “I figured it out” without saying what the solution was. Your FW, & CPS is very intuitive. A huge improvement vs the factory CPS. Thank you for all your effort. GARY
