Following up this post about GPS performance increasing, I decided to replace my RT-90's GPS antenna, as I found getting a fix with it was quite slow.
I used the same amplified antenna listed in the MD-UV380 thread.
The modification is pretty simple:
- open the radio, disconnect the flat-flex, unscrew the head,
- disassemble the head (4 screws),
- remove the original antenna (there is a small double sided tape patch between the antenna and the backcover),
- cut the tab because the new antenna is longer than the original one,
- install the new antenna (reusing the double sided tape), connect the new antenna (uFL/IPEX).
- reassemble the whole thing.
