Hello everybody,

In the link there are some tips for those who want to try to mount a new GPS antenna on the RT3s.

Hi, Like many I have been dissatisfied with the GPS performance. Based on some info in this post I have replaced the "Jumpstar JS-H210" module that came with the radio with an "ATGM336H-5N31" module. I did not change the antenna or any other components in the radio.

I'm now getting a cold start GPS position in about 45 seconds outdoors, which is a big improvement.

The module is a direct replacement.

Here is the Aliexpress link to the chip.

I masked of the surrounding components with Kapton tape and used a hot air station to remove the chip old chip. Then some solder wick and alcohol to clean up the pads. Then soldered the new chip on.

I would love to extend my thanks to EA5JOP and EA5JOQ for their amazing guide for GPS on this handheld. I have followed the guide without issue and it looks perfect, can identify many satellites with good signal relatively quickly. However it never can get a lock, even after 20 mins in the same position. It doesn’t seem to make a difference whether it’s inside or outside, the signal strengths are the same just no lock. I’ve attached photos of my build and the gps screen.

I disassembled my radio to install a GPS module in my Non-GPS UV390. The inside of the radio is very small. There are terminal pads to install the GPS chip, but I couldn't find a place to mount the GPS antenna.
Is there anyone on the forum who has managed to install a GPS module and GPS antenna in the UV390? If so, I would appreciate it if you would share how you did it.

Cheers, 73
