MDUV390 Pro/Plus with GPS…

Post by N8JLK » Mon Dec 25, 2023 11:39 pm

Greetings.

I’ve had a GD77 running OpenGD77 for years as my main DMR mmdvm, but yesterday decided to check out OpenMDUV380 on my regular UV380 and wow, should’ve done it sooner as I wasn’t really ever using it. I have had a regular UHF MD380 (running md380tools) since so long ago it predates “Pi-Star” and was used with simply w mmdvm and mmdvmhost on Linux. It runs 24/7/365 using a battery eliminator. My main “for work” DMR is the Anytone 878ii+ though. Based on the UV380’s performance now, seriously considering a TYT MDUV390G Pro/Plus 10W with GPS as that seems like it’d be the ultimate HT for “OpenGD77”-based firmware. Anyone have one and can comment on its GPS? (Accurate, aquiers quickly, etc).

Thanks!

Someone else posted about this, but I don't think they own a UV390Plus, they just wanted to know if the 10W power level would work.

I think several people have installed the firmware on the UV380 plus, but not the 390, so we have no way to know for sure if it works, or what the power output is.

I have tried to contract TYT multiple times, including via their dealers in the USA, but they never reply to any of the questions.
i.e the dealers reply, but when the dealers contact TYT they don't get an answer

In this thread someone mentions installing OpenGD77 on a UV390 plus, additionally there is a link to a YouTube video showing it working on a UV390+

Thanks for the link.

I don't remember the contents of all the threads and err on the side of caution.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I think I'm just going to go ahead and order one since the odds are very good everything will work. If not, I'd still be left with a decebt DMR anyway. I'll follow up here and post how it runs, incliuding power measurements. Have a great New Year!

Thanks.

Let us know how you get on, especially the power measurement, becuase we may need to do a version for the 390 Plus if its power levels are up to 10W.

Make sure you measure the power when you first receive the radio, when its still running the official firmware and confirm whether it can actually produce 10W on 70cm as well as 2m.

Produceing 10W on 2m is not too hard, because I think the PA transistor in the older radios was rated above 5W, and the GD77 can output about 7W if the PA drive is set to its maximum.
However 10W on 70cm is much harder to achieve

I have two MD-UV390 Plus [5 watt] radios running OpenGD77.

With regard to your question on GPS, I've noticed the sensitivity between the two radios differs greatly. One can happily pick up ~8 satellites while indoors after a few minutes, while the other will struggle to locate multiple after 15 minutes. Both work fine outdoors.

Please will anyone who has the UV380/390 PLUS version, whether it works correctly or not with the OpenGD77 firmware, use the "Backup registers" function in the CPS, and zip the file and then post it here

In the CPS.
Make sure you select the Radio Type as MD-9600/UV380 etc
In the Extras menu item select "OpenGD77 support"
On the OpenGD77 support screen, press the "Backup registers" button.

This will prompt to save the file.

After the file has been saved, zip it and post it here

We need this data for multiple versions of the UV380/390 PLUS radios, both 5W and 10W to try to understand the manufacturer settuings which may be affecting the display operation on the 10W version of the UV380/390

I've sent registers from both of my working MD-UV390 Plus 5W GPS radios to F1RMB.

Who did you send them to, Daniel F1RMB or me (VK3KYY)

If you only sent them to Daniel can you send them to me, or just zip them and post them as an attachment to the forum
