the shortage seems to be easing
I have a 2w ordered from the pi hut here in the Uk. I thought it was worth getting the 2w for the extra money.

Using the non Wifi zero would cost you even more because you would need an external USB ethernet or wifi adaptor

The main problem now is the shortage on Raspberries , most of the pi-stars use a Pi Zero W or Zero 2W and the latter is often on backorder.
I'm building an analog FM hotspot for SVXLink for the moment and waiting for the Zero 2 W.
FWIW, the shortage seems to be easing. I've been able to obtain five Zero 2Ws in the past few months and have upgraded every Zero based project in my house. My hotspots and PiHole DNS server run so much nicer on the 2W! Sign up with one or more vendors to be notified when stock arrives, you might be surprised.
I checked some of the larger distributors here:

Farnell estimated 2024-03-18
Digikey 2024-02-09
Elfa Distrelec not available

(most of the distributors only sell to companies)

I ordered four from Mouser in early October 2023 and received them in December. Then I got an "in stock" email from Adafruit so I ordered another from them, which came in just a few days. Adafruit limits customers to one board per order.
