DM-1701 - Shouldn't it show up as a serial port"

Post by OZ1FTG » Thu Apr 25, 2024 7:07 pm

I just got two DM-1701 , and have converted them to OpenGD77 - Thank you :D

I had the idea that the radio would show up as serial device when connected to a PC.
Is it supposed to do that ??

But under Windows it just showed as a STM in DFU mode under the USB section in Hardware Manager - No COM port.
And in linux it showed up like this :

DM-1701 - Original fw.

Code: Select all

Apr 25 17:21:17 T430 kernel: [77214.948946] usb 4-2: new full-speed USB device number 4 using xhci_hcd
Apr 25 17:21:17 T430 kernel: [77215.132993] usb 4-2: New USB device found, idVendor=0483, idProduct=df11, bcdDevice= 2.00
Apr 25 17:21:17 T430 kernel: [77215.133009] usb 4-2: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
Apr 25 17:21:17 T430 kernel: [77215.133016] usb 4-2: Product: Digital Radio in USB mode
Apr 25 17:21:17 T430 kernel: [77215.133022] usb 4-2: Manufacturer: AnyRoad Technology
Apr 25 17:21:17 T430 kernel: [77215.133028] usb 4-2: SerialNumber: 0000000001xx
Apr 25 17:21:17 T430 mtp-probe: checking bus 4, device 4: "/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:08.1/0000:06:00.4/usb4/4-2"
Apr 25 17:21:17 T430 mtp-probe: bus: 4, device: 4 was not an MTP device
Apr 25 17:21:17 T430 mtp-probe: checking bus 4, device 4: "/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:08.1/0000:06:00.4/usb4/4-2"
Apr 25 17:21:17 T430 mtp-probe: bus: 4, device: 4 was not an MTP device
That said everything worked fine.
I could update the fw w. any problems.

I just expected it to show up as some kind of ttyACM device.

Hmmm .... I'm not totally crazy 8-)

Just connected my MD-UV380 (OpenGD77) , and that one shows up as a ttyACMxx

So does the DM-1701 when it is loaded w. OpenGD77.

Apr 25 20:47:32 T430 mtp-probe: bus: 4, device: 6 was not an MTP device

So I think i have learned that:

The DM-1701 original firmware does not present it self at a serial device, when in "normal mode"
OpenGD77 does present it self as a serial device when in normal mode,

So my initial confusion on windows with the 1701 org. fw. , where i did not see the radio create a COM port.
Was probably due to me looking at the windows hardware manager, after i had converted my MD-UV380 to OpenGD77.
And i was sure i saw a COM port "pop up", when uploading a codeplug.

Am i correct here ??

You are correct.

The original firmware does not enumerate as a com port.

OpenGD77 does enumerate as a com port in normal use.

Both radios enumerate as an STM DFU device when set to download firmware. (This is defined in the radios bootloader which remains untouched by OpenGD77. )
