Date / Time Display missing?

Post by KE2CCG » Sun May 26, 2024 12:44 pm

Hello,

I've noticed that the stock firmware for the DM-1701 (pre-Open GD77) shows a date and time display on the lower band of the screen. The OpenGD77 firmware appears to completely remove the date / time data. Yet, there appears to be adequate space on other areas of the screen.

Questions: Is my observation correct? Are any developers working on adding back the date / time display for the DM-1701?

Thanks so much for your consideration!

Yes, the time and date are not shown constantly on the main screen. I'm pretty sure the time is just useless since internal clock is way too inaccurate, so unlike GPS-enabled radios the 1701 has no source (but the OP) for frequent enough time correction/update. Unless you care on SAT prediction and doppler shift (thus do frequent manual time update), the time as well as soon becomes the date is always wrong, so it has no real sense to be constantly displayed. My two cents.

The internal clock in these radios does not keep good time.

The radio is not designed to be an accurate timepiece

The clock is usable for satellite operation for a few days after the keps are uploaded from the CPS because the CPS also sets the date and time using the time on the PC, but after a few days, or max 1 week, both the clock and the keps become unusable because they will no longer be correct.

IMO. There isn't I good Use Case to display the inaccurate clock time permanently on the screen

And I'm currently doing some tests in this area.
After two days, the RTC don't have any clock skew on my RT3S and MD-UV390 (not even a second). The DM-1701 just entered the test (all of these are genuine STM32 equiped).

I think the main problem with the RTC is that it relies on the tiny backup battery to keep it running while the radio is powered off. We already know that this battery is very likely to become discharged.

I agree about that, but that's different problem.

BTW, if it's build like the MD-380, the backup battery is constantly charged from the main battery.

It's only charged while the radio is turned on

Okay.

The backup battery case is closed.
Back to the rtc clock skew. Tests are still running here.

I've a DM1701, and I think I've only updated the KEPS the first time I've ever used it, roughly a month ago.
Clock is skewed by 26 seconds ahead.

It seems to be a "good enough" time piece. I'd love to have the option to see the current time, even if I know it can get skewed after a couple of months.
