Have just got a DM-1701

Post by KA1CM » Sat Jun 08, 2024 12:44 am

Hi All,

I just have got a DM-1701 from eBay for $68. The first impression is not so great. I've installed OpenGD firmware and will play with it. The first two disappointment is the design of the select and volume knob that slam together. The Display cover that block part of the screen (top and right). I've tried RT84 firmware and the 1701 firmware. The 1701 suit my radio a little better, but still not perfect.

Will play with it, and will report back.

I'm very tempted to peel off the display cover and replaced it with some smartphone screen protector.
The 1701 firmware skip a line in the menu, not a big deal, but it doesn't look neat. If I can getting rid of the screen cover, then I can use RT84 firmware.

OK, I've taken it off. It is actually a lens.

Thanks for the warning, Roger.

Here is my finished product.

First use 2,500 grit sand paper to remove the black paint.

Then polish the lens to remove the haze caused by the sand paper.

Good job

I did something similar, but only to remove the paint above the top of the display.

I also thought about buying some acrylic sheet and cutting a replacement lens by hand, but never go around to doing it

At last I removed the plastic lens on my 1701 but as it has borders in the case with the same width as the black border on the lens it's no idea to remove the border on the lens.
I will just glue it back.

Are the borders obscuring the LCD panel ?

If the border does not block part of the screen, there is no point to remove it. For my case, the 1701 firmware at the time show only 5 lines in the menu (with one blank line). I don’t like that and want to use RT84 firmware. If I use RT84 firmware, the border blocks the top part of the screen.

P.S. 1701 firmware now show 6 lines in the menu, no more blank line. It looks better now. If it were me I would not do this again.
