DM-1701 charger on 12V ?

Post by SA0BUX » Wed Mar 05, 2025 7:20 am

My 10V 1A PSU for the charger broke yesterday in the Europlug pin, as the radio was delivered with a US charger I had replaced it with one I bought on the European market.
Sometimes you wish you had UK plugs instead :)

10V is a bit unusual, most of the other radios (RT3S/MD2017) use a 12V PSU for the charger base.

Anyone tried to run the base on 12V instead ?

The chip is marked HC5812 MSLX236 and I haven't found any datasheet on google for it.

Or I could replace the circuit with some other Li-ion charger circuit, maybe a USB-C based from Aliexpress ?

I've used mine on 12V without any problems. Note, not 13.8V.
Cheers,
Pieter.

In the charger base VT1701 there is a SC6038 charging controller, datasheet see attached is not allowed to attach.

Its Vin(max) is rated for 18V, so it might safely work at a 12V power supply, but I wouldn't recommend to use it without additional protection at a car lighter plug.

Just received a 1701 from a vendor in Miami Florida. It has the European wall wart with the round pins, so this package was for export, but I got it 100 miles north of Miami. I have plenty of 14 volt wall warts for Motorola Trbo radios. I notified the seller, & waiting for a reply. I could get a US/European adaptor for $3, but I’m wondering if my 14 volt Moto wall warts could safely be used without causing damage. GARY.
