RSSI read=out

Post by OK1TE » Sun Dec 20, 2020 3:03 pm

Hello,
thank you very much for implementing the RSSI read-out. It's a feature we have discussed and wished on the Blind Hams mailing list.
There we thought about one more feedback method which I think could be useful also for sighted users, so I venture to discuss it here.

When holding SK2 pressed, could be the signal strength presented by the pitch of continuous tone? I know the tone generating isn't very straight forward, but it's the fastest way helping to figure out the best antenna position. As on the digital signals you cannot determine the signal quality by audio perception, the S-meter is essential.
Using an external mic you could then find the best position even with the HT above your head where you couldn't see the displayed values and audio feedback would be appreciated.

SK2 is already assigned for long press to monitor mode

So what happens if someone wants to use Monitor mode on the RSSI screen ?

Anyway, I doubt anyone has time to write this function. I certainly don't. My work commitments now take most of my time

Currently nothing...

I was afraid to see reply like this, but at least I've tried... Still, thank you for reaction, I fully understand that.
Anyway, noone even has a possibility to write any function now.

... habet ...

Okay, and voicing the RSSI while the SK1 is pressed? (without the "S" repeated each time)
Imagine you need to find a suitable antenna position having a limited time of the repeater carier. In FM mode you'd simply search for the lowest noise. But what to do in DMR mode when you cannot see the display?

Unfortunately, there will always be an infinite list of things the firmware doesn't do.

Hi,
I've tried to implement the sound (tone) feedback while SK1 is held down, just few lines solution.
It works pretty well, but only for DMR. In FM mode the tone (or maybe even displayed RSSI?) is not updated while the tone is played. I'd bet you have some hint - having deep knowledge of the internals. Any ideas, please?
