OK, Old chip out and new chip in, but I have "FLASH MEM ERROR" on the screen as soon as I turn the radio on. and Then "ERROR WHILE RESTORING" message from CPS. Is this because my lousy soldering skill or have I done something wrong?

You need to check the soldering, and continuity. "FLASH MEM ERROR" is when the chip can't be identified.
Also, is the orientation correct (I don't have RD-5R PCB pictures).

If everything is fine, send me an email, I will build a version that could display the flash ID.

Thank you Daniel, I will check my joint again.

This is original chip

Okay. I agree, the orientation is correct.

The upgrade is completed, the problem was because the clearance between the memory chip and the speaker is less than I anticipated. Due to the size of 25Q128 is being bigger than the original chip, I have to bend the legs and leave about 2mm of space between the chip and the board, in another words, the chip was not sit on the board. In the assembly process the speaker on the front case must have pressed down on the chip and damaged the board. The 4 pads on the bottom row were gone. I ended up fixing the pads and it is working now. Thank you so much for all the support and great information.

However, I have a question. For the custom 16Mb I can have 346061 contacts. How come the Rt3S with only 8Mb can have 342864 contacts, and custom 8Mb can only have 192611 contacts? Compression algorithm?

RT-3S contains 16Mb Flash memory not 8Mb

In fact all STM32 CPU radios currently have 16Mb Flash memory
GD77 and RD5R have 1Mb
The old DM1801 has 2MB.
The other variants show in the list are for people who have modified their radios over the years, or had custom/special versions from TYT etc

The data is compressed for all radios using the same system used by many other radios, where 4 bytes are compressed into 3.

This does cause some strange values for maximum number of ID's, depending on the record length. i.e 48 and 47 characters show the same number of possible ID's because 47 is not divisible by 4

Weird thing happen. if I set display option to display contact to 2 lines. every time the radio heard a station it will change the Color Code and stop the audio output, because the transmitting station is not on that Color code it had changed to.

Everything work normally if the option set to 1 line.

Check whether you have CC Scan enabled

Please also refer to viewtopic.php?f=13&t=2509&start=10#p21166. I just read your post and it reminded me that I forgot to follow up on my 2022 post ;-) At that time I started reducing max. number of chars to avoid the weird CC changes and I think it didn't happen since.

Assume you just loaded max. lengths of IDs based on your recent memory modifications and the "old CC bug" is still there somehow (BTW: thanks for the mod details and photos - I'm about to upgrade one of my RD5Rs as well...).
