OpenGD77

G'day.

In the Features Not Supported sticky post it says that SMS isn't supported due to lack of information about how SMS messages are encoded for transmission as DMR data but this post is from October 2020. Is this still the case? If so, what information is needed? Because I may have found a wee bit of information about that.

Hmm, interesting. Maybe SMS capability's not too far away if they get this to work. I hope so.

AFIK. The work in progress is NOT to add SMS support to the normal operation of the firmware; it's only to allow Hotspot mode to pass SMS traffic, which is quite different to being able to send or receive SMS

Ofc, but maybe something can be learned on the road that makes it's easier to implement and it in the normal operation.
Like understanding the different SMS formats.

That's what I was thinking too.

Implementing full data capabilities is a lot of work compared to just enabling transfer of data frames in hotspot mode.
I did send Roger some code that enables data in hotspot mode. It is working for my GD77 as a hotspot for some weeks now.

But the whole DMR code in OpenGD77 is build around voice transmissions.
That makes it difficult to implement full data capabilities and requires some time-intensive refaktoring.

Then there is a lot of CRC checking and handshake required to enable reliable data transfers. Some garbled voice frames do not hurt, one wrong data bit renders the whole fragment of multiple data frames useless. Some parts of this is done by the C6000 but not all.

There is enough information available in the internet to get SMS decoded. So that would not be too problematic.

And if that all works you need some sort of a GUI.

Well, maybe we'll get DMR SMS someday. Meanwhile I'm loving my RT-3S with OpenGD77 on it.

I do have one question though. Retevis supposedly supports OpenGD77 on their compatible radios. Has anyone reached out to Retevis for information about how DMR SMS works in their own firmware?

Retevis doesn't write the firmware for its DMR radios. Most of the low cost Chinese radio companies use firmware written by the same third party company. This company is unknown but we suspect it is connected to the chip manufacturer or government.

About the only Chinese company that seems to write it's own firmware is Anytone.
