Repeater interface node as Hotspot?

Post by W8JMO » Fri Mar 28, 2025 6:52 pm

I've got a DMR repeater that isn't networked to Brandmeister (yet) and I'm not sure if I want to use the MMDVM/Pi Hat as the repeater controller without first asking if what my subject eludes to is possible.

I have an RT3S with OpenGD77 on it and while I know the radio is easily interfaced with the pi via USB to make a hot spot, is it possible to make that hot spot act like a traditional radio would to key a repeater? My guess is no, but I haven't tinkered around a whole lot due to time constraints. I would prefer to use the repeater's built-in controller and have a node radio be the interface..

Another thought is to use the MMDVM/repeater interaface in simplex mode to work the basic functions but still keep the repeater working as I desire... but given the subscriber radio creates a handshake with the repeater, would an MMDVM in simplex be able to use the data to steer talkgroups and pass audio?

Anyone have insight or made either scenario work?
