Wind noise on internal microphone
Wind noise on internal microphone
Hello,
compared to the GD77, the RT3s makes significantly more background noise with PTT without modulation!
Can anyone confirm that?
Can you do something about it?

Re: ALPHA version - Known problems
Please give some more information. What background noise are you hearing?

On the GD77, there is almost no background noise on PTT without modulation.
On the Retevis RT3s, it sounds like wind noise.
With external handheld microphone, the effect is no longer present.

Re: ALPHA version - Known problems
I haven't noticed anything like that. It sounds like you may have a problem with the internal microphone. There is probably nothing the firmware can do about that.
One thing that might be worth trying is to reduce the microphone gain in the sound settings.

Hi Colin,
AF level -> Without modulation -> PTT only!
With external handheld microphone, the effect is no longer present.
Info: External Antenna

Re: Wind noise on internal microphone
Just checked my RT3S and the mic level is 1/3 of what you are seeing.
As we've had several hundred downloads of the RT3S/UV380 firmware an no one else noticing this, I think its likely you have some internal noise on your radio
Some people have told me the FM audio gain is too high and they had to reduce it by 6dB or even 9dB, but my radio is too loud on FM, so there appears to be considerable variation in the electrical characteristics of these radios.
I can't remember if we compensate the mic bar graph for the FM or DMR gain controls, as we read the mic input level via the VOX sampling input, as on FM we can't access the raw audio samples
Re: Wind noise on internal microphone
I have just checked and I agree with Roger, on both my MDUV380 and my MDUV390 the mic level with no modulation is between the D and the M of 'DMR'. It may be your radio has a very sensitive internal microphone, in which case you may need to reduce the DMR mic gain. The meter reading on DMR will reflect the change but on FM it will not.

Re: Wind noise on internal microphone
Hello Roger, hello Colin!
Thanks for the quick reply!
I think it's the hardware. The radio is brand new!
At -15db it gets a little better, but doesn't eliminate the problem.

Re: Wind noise on internal microphone
Did you try reverting to the official firmware and re-testing ?
I know it does not display the mic level in the official firmware, but if the mic is very noisy, I presume you can hear it e.g. on FM
