Wind noise on internal microphone
Re: Wind noise on internal microphone
Hi Alfred
Its strange that only your radio has this problem.
Although I opened by RT3S, I did not remove the front panel PCB, I only soldered to the main PCB to erase the CPU completely, using a hardware programmer dongle
Perhaps the problem is the casting of the plastic.
It is a common problem on external microphones to only have a very small hole to allow the sound to reach the mic.
I usually modify any external mic to have a larger hole in front of the mic, by using a 5mm or larger drill to remove excess pastic.
Possibly you can try something like that, or perhaps the mic has an electrical fault.

Re: Wind noise on internal microphone
Hi Roger,
the internal microphone had an electrical fault.
I replaced it with another one from the tinkering box.
No more wind noise without modulation. Voice reproduction is good.
The included antenna was also very very bad, it is resonant on 560Mhz - so unusable for amateur radio - I had to replace it too. With this antenna the BitError rate in DMR at the hotspot went up to 7%. When I used a good antenna, everything was good again -> BitError rate less than 0,5% ! I did not get a good unit unfortunately.
An external microphone has always worked well, no fault here.
In the future I will buy again a radio of the brand "TYT", maybe I have more luck here.

Re: Wind noise on internal microphone
The RT-3S and MD-UV380 are the same radio hardware and both are made in the TYT factory.oe7abh wrote: ↑Mon Dec 05, 2022 8:07 amHi Roger,

I don't think TYT or Retevis actually test the radios in the factory
Anyway, at least you have fixed the problem.
Re: Wind noise on internal microphone
Have you tried to do this test in UHF ?
I'm testing 2 x RT3S Retevis radios with Opengd77 in UHF
and I don't observe the problem reported.

Re: Wind noise on internal microphone
If you read the thread you will see that the radio in question had a faulty microphone which has now been replaced.
Re: Wind noise on internal microphone
your hardware doesn't have metal shielding between the circuits, maybe the noise is due to the lack of internal shielding. Mine doesn't have this problem

Re: Wind noise on internal microphone
If anyone has this problem, I can recommend these (internal) microphones. They work perfectly!
