Slow GPS on Retevis RT3S

Post by W8CPT » Fri Mar 24, 2023 2:59 pm

So my GPS was outside today with a clear view of the sky for over an hour and never got a fix. Is there an issue with this? Also is there a way to set the position manually so I can use the satellite tracking?

The sensitivity on the GPS and it's antenna is very bad, I have not yet been able to get a fix with my RT3S.
It's also doing cold start everytime as there is no battery backup of the GPS and it takes time to download almanac.
I could see some satellites in the status sometimes.

But my Anytone 878UV+ isn't much better, I have stopped try using the GPS on these radios, it's just a gimmick.

You can key in the latitude and longitude in the Radio Info Location screen.

I have had good luck with the GPS in my RT3S. Even indoors I get a lock within 10 minutes. Reception is best if you lay it flat, display up.

Mine seemed quite slow yesterday, after an initial flash of the firmware.

I went for a quick walk, within a few minutes it had a lock, with a 1m accuracy reported.

Checking the reported lat / lon, it was spot on as per the map.
